Texas might not sound like the place to find great wines and waterfalls, but we can tell you where the hidden gems are just outside of Austin. Are you heading to South by Southwest or planning a trip to the Lone Star State? We have been sharing all of our favorite spots on the site, which you can see here.
The Westcave Cellars Winery is about 45 minutes outside of the city. During the scenic drive to it make sure to stop by the beautiful Hamilton Pool. It is a short hike down to the pool so wear comfortable shoes, and bring cash because the public park doesn’t offer alternative payment options. Once you’ve taken a dip, keep driving along Hamilton Pool Road and you’ll see Westcave on your left. The charming staff will teach you more than you can imagine during one of their samplings or you can take a formal wine tour. If you are visiting in April, check out the Texas Wildflower and Wine event.
Not far from Barton Springs you will find the Zilker Botanical Garden at 2220 Barton Springs Road. The park has several smaller gardens within one to maximize the creative options available to Texas grown flora. While we walked the whole property, our favorites were the Doug Blachly Butterfly Trail and Mabel Davis rose garden, pictured above and below.
The Hartman Prehistoric Garden was founded after amateur paleontologists discovered dinosaurs once roamed the grounds of Zilker. Officials say the group found more than 100 tracks made by six or seven reptiles along with the bones of an ancient turtle. The area has a beautiful waterfall among the statues.
